HVAC (Heating Ventilation and AC)

HVAC stands for Heating Ventilation and air conditioning; it is now more commonly known as HVAC, which includes refrigeration in its acronym.

HVAC systems are essential in homes, offices and buildings. They heat and cool air, ventilate it and help filter pollutants.

Heating

Heating and cooling is only one part of a system that will make you feel comfortable in your home all year round. Ventilation, filtration, and cleaning of the indoor air are also important aspects to improve its quality.

All systems work the same way, even though they may look slightly different. They bring in fresh air from outside through intake ducts and then pass it through distribution ducts to heat or cool it before pushing it through the back door.

Heat pumps use refrigerant as a heat absorber, heat transporter, and heat releaser. They can heat and cool your house with a single unit. Furnaces, boilers and other heating systems use fossil fuels like propane or natural gas to produce heat. Furnace air handlers distribute the heated and cooled air produced by other HVAC units to every room in your home, ensuring that it reaches your desired temperature. Many systems also include ductless options which do not require major renovations.

Cooling

Your HVAC cooling component pulls in fresh air from the outside and pushes through ductwork to various rooms within your home. It filters it to prevent pollutants from entering rooms. Modern ventilation systems have smaller footprints than older ducts. This allows for ductless options with minimal renovation.

Even though HVAC and Air Conditioning are often used interchangeably, they have distinct differences. An air conditioner cools only a room, while a complete HVAC system can provide full heating and cooling. HVAC systems use boilers, heat pumps or furnaces powered by different energy sources to create warmth in a room. They then distribute that warmth through ductwork and central blower systems.

Ventilation

The "V" of HVAC is ventilation. It provides fresh air into a space, while removing stale air or polluted air using mechanical means like ductwork or window units.

Air conditioning cools air by evaporating the refrigerant from an outdoor condenser and blowing it into the house through ductwork and vents. This removes heat and moisture while improving the indoor air quality. It filters out dust, smoke and odors as well as allergens and VOCs (volatile compounds) from cleaning products and cleaning agents.

Depending on the climate and the design of your home, heat pumps, furnaces, or air handlers may be used to power these systems. Some homes use heat pumps and furnaces that can both absorb and transport energy and cool the house. Other properties only use an air conditioner to cool by evaporating freon, like in refrigerators.

Thermostat

A thermostat is an essential piece of equipment for any home. It controls both heating and cooling systems. A thermostat is a low-voltage automatic device that automatically adjusts temperature. It also filters the air in rooms by reducing humidity and improving indoor air.

Failing thermostats may cause heating or cooling systems to become non-functional, resulting in costly repairs or replacements. To avoid costly repairs or replacements, it is important to seek professional assistance to assess the thermostat.

The traditional thermostat is made up of two metals that are bolted into a strip. This strip acts as a bridge for an electrical circuit connected to a heating system. As heat enters a room, this strip bends slightly. Once bent, the current from the circuit flows to terminals G and Y/O on the thermostat board, signaling the condenser unit to start cooling the building.
